Daniel Pommereulle

Back to 80's Archive

The French sculptor, painter, filmmaker, poet and actor Daniel Pommereulle (1937 - 2003) was a rare artist, provocative and complex. Described by the writer Alain Jouffroy as an "Objector," he explored notions of cruelty and violence (cutting, piercing) and transparency in his work. Franck Bordas and I spent a great deal of time with him in 1981 on "Au voleur !," an extravagant series of 11 lithographs enclosed in a mirrored slipcover. A tribute to painter Odilon Redon, the series evokes death looking at itself. In 1987, I printed and published a large, four-part hand-colored lithograph and collage (30 copies).
