Born in Paris in 1932, Claude Yvel, one of the masters of French hyperrealist painting, is also the author of numerous publications on the Old Masters’ pigments and techniques. He is also a master of all printing technique, including stone lithography; in the 1950s, he earned his living as a draftsman for commercial printers. For me, he has been a mine of information.
Between 1980 and 1985, first at the Bordas atelier and then at my shop, we worked together to produce three complex, virtuoso lithographs. We also produced a number of small prints. In 1991, I published his first book (printed in lithography at 210 copies) on traditional oil-painting techniques, for which Claude drew all the illustrations on stone.
Claude Yvel is an honorary professor at the Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts in Shenyang, China, where he regularly holds workshops on traditional painting techniques.
