Catherine Viollet

Back to 80's Archive

Born in 1953 in Chambéry, Catherine Viollet is the only woman associated with the Figuration Libre movement. She appeared very early on the Parisian scene and showed her work in the early 1980s with Robert Combas, Hervé Di Rosa, Rémi Blanchard and François Boisrond before defining her own style, in-between figuration and abstraction . Her expressive, sensitive gestures translate wonderfully to stone lithography. In the print shop, she produced beautiful botanicals as well as delicate figures reminiscent of Greek vases. "Hagia Triada" (1987) combines reduction printing and the use of a drawing printed both in positive and negative.
